Giuseppe Arcimboldo was born in Milan in the year 1527. He invented a portrait type consisting of painted
animals, flowers, fruit, and objects composed to form a
human likeness. He has been seen by some as the forerunner of Surrealism in the 20th century. His
portraits of human heads made up of vegetables, fruit,
sea creatures and tree roots, remain a source of
fascination today. His paintings have been used as album covers for rock bands and as inspiration for animated characters such as the 'soup genie' in the film The Tale of Despereaux. Following Arcimboldos example
students will create a self-portrait that will display their true inner self.
