Frida Kahlo is now considered as the most widely
recognized woman artist of all time, and this despite the very narrow subject range of her work: the variation of one major theme – her self-portrait. Her image has retained a stubborn mystery – iconic like a 20th century
Mona Lisa - without the smile. The actual paintings are mostly small, some having been painted on bits
of Masonite, or metal like miniature Mexican retablos.
In this class students will explore the mystery of
themselves as they paint a Frida Kahlo Mexican retablo style self-portrait.
