MOLAS FROM CENTRAL AMERICA

Category: Visual Arts

Artist: Noel Merriam  [More Information for This Artist]
Grade 3 - 5, 2 Hour Workshop
Workshop Cost $80

In the Panama Canal zone of Central America, a small island community in Central America is responsible for one of the most unusual and compelling textile works in the world. Called Molas, these pieces are multiple layers of fabric, cut back to reveal the layers beneath, in complex and dazzling colors and designs. Designs can be abstract shapes, or illustrate stories or contemporary themes. All of the layers are stitched. This workshop will use bright colors of felt and use layers which will be cut back and also applied, the whole being fastened together with fabric glue. FA-A 117.11(3.1), (3.2) & (3.3) FA-A 117.14(4.1), (4.2) & (4.3) FA-A 117.17(5.1), (5.2) & (5.3)
