ARTS San Antonio
is proud to present the 2008-2009 ARtsTEach catalog, a collaboration
between schools, corporate interest and the community. Since it's
inception, ARtsTEach has been bringing all forms of the arts to
elementary schools across San Antonio. We intend to continue our
commitment to better education through the arts by seeing that the
ARtsTEach program reaches more children in San Antonio and the surrounding
area each year. Through the ARtsTEach program, ARTS San Antonio
intends to continue building partnerships and developing the ever
increasing knowledge that "the arts are basic to education".
When you receive
your ARtsTEach Catalog, or you look at the ARtsTEach Web page, take
time to look it over and get familiar with it because, even though
it looks the same as last year, the contents have had some changes.
We have added exciting new workshops, to our Artist Roster. We are
thrilled and excited to have all of them be a part of our program.
We know that our artists are among the very best in San Antonio
and some of them have been favorites of yours for a long time. It
is our hope that ARtsTEach will remain a very vibrant, positive
and memorable part of your student's curriculum.
Using
the ARtsTEach Catalog
The workshops
in this catalog are organized by grade levels; K–2, 3–5,
and Secondary. This has been done to help teachers pick grade relevant
workshops and to assure optimum results from the service.
Contained in
these sections are workshops representing the full range of art
disciplines, including: Cultural, Dance, Literature, Music, Theatre
and Visual Art workshops. Teachers and administrators are encouraged
to browse through the entire catalog to see what might support the
goals and objectives at their appropriate class or campus. We also
encourage teacher/artist communication prior to the workshops. This
way the teacher can present any special needs or curriculum requests
to assure a successful experience for all participants. ARtsTEach
believes in grade level consistency.
When ordering
ARtsTEach workshops please keep in mind that THE
MINIMUM REQUESTED TIME FOR ANY ARTIST IS TWO HOURS IN CONSECUTIVE
TIME SLOTS. We have had to make this change in order
to enable the artists to set aside blocks of time at a particular
school and spend less time traveling. With the extra travel time,
artists fill up their days very quickly causing other schools to
be denied their request for workshops. Please remember that a request
form is a “Request” and that the artist may have already
received requests for the same day that you are requesting. For
scheduling purposes, ARtsTEach suggests sending in requests AS
SOON AS POSSIBLE. This means sending in the request at
least two full weeks prior to the date requested. Requests received
within two-weeks of the date requested can not be guaranteed by
ARtsTEach.
We have found
that a lot of the schools use the program mostly during the months
of April and May and we are inundated with requests at that time.
ARtsTEach is a year around program and we would like to
see more schools utilize it to support their curriculum throughout
the entire school year.
When
you see a workshop that you would like to schedule for your students,
fill out the request form and have your principal sign it. Please
fax it to the attention of the ARtsTEach coordinator at (210) 226-1981
or mail to ARtsTEach c/o Arts San Antonio, 222 E. Houston Street,
Suite 400, San Antonio, Texas 78205. You can order here online as
well, however we will still need to have the signed request faxed
or sent in to us.
Unless otherwise indicated in a workshop's description, workshop
costs are based on a class of 25 students.
The price of each workshop is listed in the
catalog. This price includes all materials needed for workshops
in addition to expertise of the artist. Schools outside Bexar County
will be charged an additional $10.00 per round trip, per artist
requested. Your school will be invoiced for services provided by
ARtsTEach.
Invoices will be sent out immediately after the workshops have taken
place.
If your
school requires special billing arrangements, please contact the
ARtsTEach coordinator at (210) 226-2891. All checks are to be made
payable to ARTS SAN ANTONIO, under no condition is payment to be
issued, or given, directly to the artists.
ARtsTEach
and the Curriculum!
ARtsTEach seeks
to be more than just a method of getting the arts into primary and
secondary school of greater San Antonio. ARtsTEach workshops are
developed each year with the intent of making correlation's to the
existing curriculum. When this occurs, not only are the arts playing
an active role in the classroom, but also the arts are generating
curiosity about thinking and learning across the entire curriculum.
In addition, ARtsTEach brings non-traditional methods of instruction
that reach students with all learning styles.
TEKS
As you may
know, before last year the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills
were distributed buy the Texas Education Agency (TEA). In this document
the state outlined requirements for all grades in all curricular
areas. Included in this were the "Fine Arts." This proves even more
need for programs like ARtsTEach to continue their goals of providing
services to schools that do not have the resources to cover these
curricular areas. If you wish
to receive a listing of the TEKS for workshops in this catalog,
please contact ARtsTEach @ 226-2891 or email ARtsTEach@ArtsSanAntonio.com
and a copy will be sent to you.
General
Student Population School Districts are responsible for enabling
students to participate actively in a well-balanced curriculum, according
to State Board of Education rules. Designed to meet individual needs,
an effective art program makes significant contributions to the development
of well-rounded, intelligent, sensitive, self-confident and contributing
members of society. In addition to enriching students' affective abilities,
art educate develops the cognitive abilities of the individual students.
Students experience the processes or perceiving, comprehending, imagining,
creating, and evaluating. These processes provide a focus for students
to develop interpretive analytic, creative, synthetic, and critical
thinking skills. ARtsTEach is the perfect vehicle to accentuate these
processes.
Special
Education The arts offer adaptable media with a history of
accommodating individual needs and talents. The objective is not the
creation of separate programs and activities for persons with disabilities;
rather, it is to ensure full participation in existing programs. Students
with the greatest number of special needs of course, will require the
greatest amount of support and individual attention. Gifted and Talented
Education Art provides creative challenges, leadership opportunities
and in-depth experiences that enable gifted and talented students to
reach their full potential. Academically gifted students have the ability
to think of many thins at a time, understand structure, and perceive
connections. Arts programs with a wide range of content, responsibilities,
and problems to be solved, present a challenge. Students are encouraged
to analyze, compare and contrast, synthesize and evaluate ideas as they
explore and discover. Through art education, students can focus their
curiosity and challenge their imagination.
Special
Student Population A major goal of any education program
is to enable students to grow physically, emotionally, aesthetically,
and intellectually to the fullest extent of their abilities. The arts
curriculum provides unique opportunities for the involvement of all
students, regardless of experience, cultural background or disabling
conditions. Participating students can alternate as observers, creators,
performers, and evaluators, thereby gaining knowledge discovering talents,
refining skill s and developing and understanding and appreciation of
the abilities and efforts of others.
Multi
Cultural Education The ARtsTEach program offers an ideal
means of enriching multi-cultural programs, because it allows bilingual,
ESL, and migrant students to see through the eyes of another, experience
feelings and ideas firsthand. Activities in art that focus on personal
experiences and interests provide students from different ethnic
groups with an opportunity to share with others their cultural forms
of expression, personal ethics, and social goals, Encouragement
of efforts enhances self image, builds confidence, and motivates
the exploration of new ideas and interests. The nature of art education
develops an understanding and appreciation of the abilities and
efforts of everyone involved.
Secondary
and Community Workshops
Grades Six through twelve:
ARtsTEach has the capability of servicing all grade levels
in arts
services and workshops. At the elementary level Artsteach is able
to create workshops of one or two hours based on the open schedule
that the primary grades run on. At the secondary level, each campus
is different. In these cases, ARtsTEach offers its services through
a contract basis.
If your campus has a need for arts services, we suggest
that you determine the content areas that are needed. From this we are able
to develop a proposal based on your needs to provide the best solution.
Community Workshops:
ARtsTEach is able to service the community at large with
arts services.
Places like Homeowners Association Centers, Nursing Homes, Churches,
etc. Together with ARtsTEach, the creations of an arts-based after-school
center for youth or a summer program are possible. The needs are
great and the possibilities are limitless.
Whatever the need is, ARtsTEach is versatile enough to create the
answer.
Please feel free to contact ARtsTEach so that we may sit
down and create a custom built workshop or artist residency for your site.
Since each contract will be different, we suggest that you plan
on approximately fifty dollars per hour, per artist for the duration
of the residency.
